Pincushion of Mini Masu

Traditionally used for celebrational sake, Japanese Masu cups have a 1,300-year history. These adorable pincushions were inspired by the elegance and joyousness of Masu cups, but made in miniature by master craftsmen at Ohashi Ryoki in Gifu Prefecture.

Mini Masu Pincushions measure just 15 mm (0.6 in) square and feature sophisticated Japanese dovetail joinery that does not require nails or glue to hold the shape of the box. The smooth hinoki cypress of the box gives off a light, woodsy fragrance.

A high-quality linen woven in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka is used as the fabric of the pincushion, which allows pins and needles to pierce easily without dulling them.

The pincushion includes a matching sewing pin made by Glass Studio Kinari in Osaka.
Pins are supple yet durable, and manufactured in Hiroshima, a city with a 300-year history of high-quality needle production. Rigorous quality control ensures delicately unified thickness and length of pins, and their ability to pierce cloth with ease.

Cohana-Awaji Kawara Magnetic Needle Rest with Needle Polisher in 5 colours

Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture, blessed with good soil, is one of the leading Kawara (Japanese traditional roof tiles) producing areas in Japan. This flower motif Awaji Kawara Magnetic Needle Rest with Needle Polisher is created with the Awaji’s rich soil and the skilled artisans at Irakato.

The origin of Awaji Kawara dates back to 1610. The first Kawara roof tiles were made for Japanese castles, and later developed along with the construction rush of various types of buildings in the Edo period. There are several types of Awaji Kawara depending on how they are made, and this item is classified as a ceramic tile that is glazed and fired. Different colors of glaze create unique expressions. Each one has its own uniqueness, resulting in a colorful needle rest that adds charm to your handicraft time.

A magnet is built inside the Kawara ceramic. The magnetic needle rest is a handy sewing accessory that can keep your sewing needles safe during your projects. Also a needle polisher is built in. To polish the needle, slowly insert the needle tip into the hole on the side and slowly pull the needle out while pushing up on the bottom part. Polishing will improve the needle’s path through the cloth.

▼The hole on the side is for polishing needles.

How to use the needle polisher

1.Slowly insert a needle from the tip into the hole on the side and pull the needle out. Please be careful of the needle tip.

2.For better polishing, after inserting the needle, move it back and forth while pushing up on the logo mark on the bottom also rotate the needle several times to polish the entire surface.

3.In case abrasive dust adheres to the needle, wipe it off with a cloth before using the needle.

Cohana-Hasami Magnetic Pin Holder in 5 colours

This durable, spool-shaped pin holder contains a strong magnet to store pins, needles, and paperclips neatly.

Fired at a low temperature by expert craftsmen, Hasami Magnetic Pin Holders boast a luster and texture reminiscent of ancient pottery and embody the wabi-sabi spirit of simple, rustic elegance. Each pin holder is finished with a colorful glaze to resemble a real spool of thread.

We collaborated with the ceramics company Ishimaru Togei of Hasami to create this exquisite piece. The town of Hasami in Nagasaki Prefecture has a 400-year history of producing the highest-quality ceramics, which are collectively known as Hasami ware.

Designed to be used with needles standing up, it is easier to insert and remove needles with one hand than conventional pin cushions, making operations even smoother.

Inside of the spool is lined with soft felt to protect pin and needles from damage by direct contact with the ceramic base.
It is also recommended for needles such as cross-stitch needles with rounded tips that are difficult to insert into a fabric pin cushion.

The built-in magnet makes it convenient for picking up dropped pins and needles directly from your workstation.
Cohana’s Seki Mini Scissor can also be attached to the sides, making it popular as a set for small needlework projects.

A smart and sophisticated way to organize your workspace or desk.

Tombo-dama Sewing Pins

These exquisite marking pins feature a tombo-dama glass bead on the head. Tombo-dama beads are a Japanese traditional craft, produced in a variety of colors and unique designs by master craftsmen. Tombo-dama literally means “dragonfly’s eye” because these beautiful glass beads resemble the mysterious eyes of dragonflies.

The glassmaking techniques used to craft the beads are a type of millefiori, or “thousand flowers,” and can be traced back to the Nara period (710-794 A.D.). Trade with Europe and Asia over the centuries also introduced many new techniques and designs to this traditional art. Glass bars are heated in the flame of a burner, carefully shaped and extruded, then attached to the pin.
Pins measure approximately 5mm in diameter at the head and are produced lovingly by hand at Kinari Glassworks in Osaka. Each pin is entirely unique with its own distinct charm, like a flower.

Pins are supple yet durable, and manufactured in Hiroshima, a city with a 300-year history of high-quality needle production. We are very particular about the thickness and length of each needle, ensuring that they easily and smoothly pierce cloth.

Iida Mizuhiki Needle ThreaderA lovely looking threader that adds glamour to your craft supplies.

Story

Mizuhiki is a decorative paper cord created by twisting washi paper and then hardening it with a glue coating.

In Japan Mizuhiki is essential when giving formal gifts, where a present is wrapped with the appropriate type of Mizuhiki. The gift-sender can express their sentiments by their choice of color, number of cords and tying method depending on the occasion. Mizuhiki not only indicates that a gift is unopened, it also has a meaning of prayer in Japanese culture. Though the knot is made from paper, it cannot be cut or untied easily, and so it symbolizes the strength of connection between people and their hearts.

The Iida Mizuhiki Needle Threader is decorated with a flower-shaped Mizuhiki called ume-musubi, or plum-flower knot. It is considered quite lucky because plum blossoms bloom before the start of spring, overcoming the winter, and the ume-musubi knot symbolizes good luck, tight bonds, and the repelling of evil. The result is a lovely-looking threader that adds a touch of glamour to your handicraft tools.

Provides smooth threading through a small needle hole.

Cohana-Kokeshi Doll Pincushion in 4 colours

A charming pincushion disguised as a traditional kokeshi doll from northern Japan. In snowy Tsugaru, woodworkers started carve small dolls called kokeshi as souvenirs for tourists to the region’s famous hot springs.

Kuroishi city of Aomori, the birthplace of Tsugaru Kokeshi, recently founded the Tsugaru Kokeshi Museum to immortalize the region’s wood crafts as well as to spur innovation and development on existing themes. We collaborated with the museum to produce this modern, functional twist on the traditional kokeshi doll.

We adopted the traditional sleek shape and bobbed hair of the kokeshi, interpreted in Cohana’s signature colors: yellow, pink, green and blue.
Each doll opens to reveal a hidden pincushion and comes with three quality needles from Meboso Hachirobei Shoten.
The doll’s base is magnetic to easily pick up fallen pins and needles.
