Cohana-Hexagonal Temari Box in 4 colours

This box is made with the wild cherry trees of the Tohoku region and topped with a handcrafted temari as a knob. Perfect for small sewing notions or other odds and ends, this elegant hexagonal box doubles as a sleek yet traditional piece of home décor.

The hexagonal shape of the box is common in Japanese home goods, as it is thought to bring harmony and stability to a household. Hand-woven balls of thread, called temari, were traditionally cherished as gifts symbolizing loyalty, friendship, and a blessed life in old Japan.

Temari balls are made by NONA. As if receiving life from nature again, NONA carefully extracts the colors from the plants and trees, dyes the threads, and uses the threads to make Temari. NONA, conveying tradition to the present with a new sensibility, creates products that are new, yet somehow remind us of the sense of time spent traveling.

Using familiar natural materials, NONA dyes the threads in the gentle colors that only nature can produce, which results in a hand made tamari balls that are both delicate and modern, a mixture of tradition and sense of freedom.

Cohana-Shozaburo Thread Snips with Iga Silk Braid in 4 colours

Shozaburo scissors are crafted in Tokyo with the utmost care, one pair at a time, by artisans with a commitment to excellence. These scissors are beloved by sewing enthusiasts throughout the world as being of the highest quality, cutting thread and fabric with ease. With proper maintenance, they are a treasure that lasts a lifetime.

The methods of forging Japanese Samurai swords were adapted in the Edo period (1603-1868) to craft Japanese scissors, and our maker Shozaburo & Co., Ltd. still uses these time-honored techniques as part of a long lineage of excellent craftsmanship.

The handles of Shozaburo scissors are wrapped with Iga silk braids. These braids, also known as kumihimo, have been manufactured in the Iga region for over 1300 years and were traditionally used in samurai armor. The master craftsman at Matsushima Kumihimo-ten in Iga winds the silk threads by hand and weaves them into braids, bringing out their unique luster. The braids are dyed with rich colors and wound around the steel handles of the scissors.

Shozaburo Thread Snips are aesthetically pleasing and gentle on the hands, making for a delightful sewing experience.

Iida Mizuhiki Needle Threader

A lovely looking threader that adds glamour to your craft supplies.

Story

Mizuhiki is a decorative paper cord created by twisting washi paper and then hardening it with a glue coating. In Japan Mizuhiki is essential when giving formal gifts, where a present is wrapped with the appropriate type of Mizuhiki. The gift-sender can express their sentiments by their choice of color, number of cords and tying method depending on the occasion. Mizuhiki not only indicates that a gift is unopened, it also has a meaning of prayer in Japanese culture. Though the knot is made from paper, it cannot be cut or untied easily, and so it symbolizes the strength of connection between people and their hearts. The Iida Mizuhiki Needle Threader is decorated with a flower-shaped Mizuhiki called ume-musubi, or plum-flower knot. It is considered quite lucky because plum blossoms bloom before the start of spring, overcoming the winter, and the ume-musubi knot symbolizes good luck, tight bonds, and the repelling of evil. The result is a lovely-looking threader that adds a touch of glamour to your handicraft tools.

Provides smooth threading through a small needle hole.

Cohana-Asanoha Parquet Pencil Sharpener in 2 colours

This hexagonal wooden pencil sharpener is ergonomically designed with gently curved corners for easy sharpening.

The lid features a traditional Japanese pattern known as Asanoha, based on a type of hemp leaf. The intricate design is crafted with various hardwoods by hand in a parquet technique called Yosegi-zaiku by the master craftsman at Yosegi Koubou Ag.

The pencil sharpener itself is created by Nakajima Jukyudo, the only manufacturer in Japan who specializes in small pencil sharpeners, and the quality of this sharpener is evident in the clean, unbroken pencil shavings that the razor-sharp blade produces.
